Angel assessed her appearance in the mirror. Was she ready for her date? Adam had told her they’d be going bowling and having pizza, so she didn’t want to dress up too much, but still wanted to look nice.
Casual and comfortable clothes, check. Hair and makeup, check. Facial expression…terror. She took a deep breath and then smiled at her reflection. Not quite there yet. She retreated to the couch, pulling her knees up to her chest.
She really liked Adam. She hadn’t wanted to, but there was something about him that made her feel at ease with him. Her friends had vouched for him, so why was she still worried and waiting for the other shoe to drop?
Relationships had never come easy to her before. Her last boyfriend had borrowed money from her and skipped town. After that, she’d vowed to be more choosy and hadn’t let anyone get close to her—until now.
Knock, knock. He was here.
She sucked in her breath, straightened her cotton blouse and opened the door.
Adam stood on the landing at the top of the stairs with his back to her, gazing out at the ocean. He turned when he saw her and a slow smile slid across his face.“You look nice.”
Angel’s heart fluttered at his observation. Such a simple thing to say and yet it affected her so greatly. She pushed her arms through her jacket sleeves and he helped her settle it around her shoulders.
“Thank you. I’m excited to be going out tonight.”
They walked down the steps single file, and then he reached for her hand as he led her to his bright orange car, opening the passenger door for her. She sat down and smiled to herself as he closed the door behind her.
“Pizza is good with you, right?” He glanced over while driving. “A few weeks ago, I reviewed a pizza place in Haven Shores that’s phenomenal.”
“I love pizza.” She wasn’t sure what to say to him. “Do you do many restaurant reviews? I hate to admit it, but I haven’t read much of the Candle Beach Weekly since I came to town.” She quickly added, “But I plan to pick one up this week.”
He shrugged. “I don’t do a lot, but sometimes I’ll review one that someone in town mentions to me. I like to make sure what we have in the paper is relevant to our customers.”
“Well, I know the paper is very well respected. I see customers in the café reading it all the time.”
He didn’t respond and she stared out the window for a minute before turning back to him.
“Hey, did you find anything out about my family? Were the county offices open?” She watched his profile.
His jaw clenched and he tightened his grip on the wheel. “Uh, I have a lead, but I don’t have anything definite yet. I’ll let you know when I do.”
“Okay, thank you so much for doing this. I really appreciate it.” Why had he visibly tensed when she asked if he’d found anything? Had
